Volunteer Work Opportunities

Tuesday through Sunday 9:00 am – 12:30 pm

Please feel free to join the daily work schedule whenever you have time. “Zazen in action,” grounds work, such as weeding, can prove very meditative. Often we work in the afternoon as well. All those so inclined are welcome.

Green Party

Saturday, July 4, 9:00 am – 2:00 pm (with lunch served afterwards)

This is the green season and there is much weed-whacking, thistle hacking, pulling, plucking, and pushing back to be done. Grab a tool and join the fun.

The garden is also a smorgasbord of greens, which will be included in the vegetarian lunch.

Full Day of Practice (conducted in silence)

Saturday, July 11, 9 am – 9 pm

There will be continuing 30-minute periods of Zazen in the Zendo, with a short walking meditation each hour. It is a wonderful opportunity for concentrated practice. Everyone is welcome. Arrive Friday evening and stay the night on Saturday, or come for whatever portion of the day that you can. Depending on attendance, food will be available in the kitchen during lunchtime.

Caregiver Retreat

Saturday, July 18, 9:30 am – 3:30 pm

The day begins with tea & coffee and introductions, then continues with quiet time for your own reflection, the always delicious lunch of the Tahoma Monastery kitchen crew, opportunities for finding support in connection with other caregivers, and if the weather is friendly, some time outside in the forest. Please wear comfortable clothes and bring walking shoes.

In the afternoon, we will rest while listening to a gifted musician play the shakuhachi – a traditional Japanese bamboo flute. We promise a relaxing cap on a relaxing day.

There is still space if you would like to attend. If you have already signed up, please reconfirm your registration. Contact Ann Cutcher to attend or confirm:
e-mail – director@ensohouse.org
phone – 360.331.4699

The retreats are limited to 15 participants and are canceled if there are fewer than three who register.

Mini-Sesshin (conducted in silence)

Friday, July 24 through Sunday, July 26

Mini-Sesshin will begin at 6:00 p.m. Friday and run until 6:30 a.m. Sunday. The schedule is focused on maximizing Zazen and will include formal silent meals. If you are coming for the first time or need a refresher on Zendo or formal meal procedures, please arrive by 5:00 p.m. Friday for instruction and orientation.

Please let us know that you will be coming, and when. Join us for all or part of the sesshin. The mini-sesshin schedule is available here

Fall Osesshin with Harada Roshi

The Fall Osesshin with Harada Roshi is scheduled for September 5 - 12, 2009. Applications will be accepted until July 13. Applications received after the July 13 deadline date will result in a place on the waiting list.

As usual, there is a great deal of interest in participating in this retreat. If you are interested in sitting the Osesshin and have not submitted an application already, please email an application or contact Myosho for information: boronart@mindspring.com.

If you are interested in receiving notices for the Osesshin with Harada Roshi, please make sure your personal information as a user on the One Drop Website is current. If your email address changes, you can update it easily. You can indicate your preferences as to which e-mail notifications you would like to receive: the Roshi's newsletters, Sesshin announcements, Monastery Messages, and news of upcoming events at Tahoma One Drop Zen Monastery. Your information is used only for these purposes. PLEASE KEEP YOUR OWN CONTACT INFORMATION CURRENT.

Thank You

Thank you to all who are continually contributing effort, time, resources, care and goodwill to Tahoma Zen Monastery. We are very grateful for your gifts of substance and service.

May we always live in a way that makes us worthy to receive your offerings.

Re Nobel Silence

During the full schedule, it is requested that each person observe Noble Silence, which means silence of body, speech, and mind; avoiding communication with fellow participants, whether by gestures, sign language, written notes, etc.

When necessary, speak with the Head Monk should any problems related to food, accommodation, health, etc. arise. But even these contacts should be kept to a minimum in order to maximize ones time and efforts to "Seek the light within oneself.”

Daily Zazen Schedule

Tuesday through Sunday
5:30 - 7:00 AM
6:00 - 8:30 PM

We do Zazen (sitting meditation) in periods of 30 minutes with a few minutes of break in between. Please be in the Zendo and on a cushion ten minutes before Zazen begins. If you arrive after a period has started, please wait in the entrance area on a cushion until the period ends, before coming into the Zendo. Chairs and kneeling benches are available.

Residents of the Monastery follow this schedule; however, non-residents are welcome to drop in anytime for one or more periods without previous announcement.

Sundays, from 8:00 – 9:15 am.

Ideal for beginners, Zazenkai includes sutra chanting, Zazen, walking meditation, and a short reading from texts by Shodo Harada Roshi. Afterwards, tea and sweets are served in the dining hall, and there is an opportunity for questions, discussion, and conversation.
